Highlights of the year must include the Gala dinner, a glittering night which not only raised
a substantial sum of money but also enabled us to reach a new audience with details of our exciting
and vital work. During 2018 we also began an exciting relationship with ACACIA UK, another small UK
charity working in education in East Africa – together we will be able to achieve so much. However,
sometimes the best things are those that on the face of it are the simplest things of all: in 2018, seven
young women and eight young men in East Africa graduated from university. These fifteen Rafiki
Thabo scholars each achieved something last year that at one point in their lives must have seemed
impossible – not because they were incapable or undeserving but simply because they were born into
poverty. Poverty limits opportunity, education provides wings to fly.
